THE VALUE OF A PENNY

1. In 2009 Walmart´s total sales volume was $408,214,000,000 ($408 Billion.... that´s a lot of pennies).

2. For the sake of illustration, let´s assume that the "average" retail price of all items sold in any given Walmart store is $10. This would include everything from a box of paper clips to a 48" Plasma, High Definition TV.

3. Doing the math given in this example, Walmart, for all it´s stores, sold 408,800,000,000 "items" in 2009.

4. If Walmart were able to save just "one penny" on the purchase price of every item they bought in 2009, this would have added $408,000,000 ($408 million) to their 2009 profits.

5. Much more than a single penny can be saved by retailers when they buy on a Direct Import Program vs traditional Domestic Programs offered by most manufacturers. Thus, this one HUGE reason why there has been a shift in moving to Direct Import Programs.

6. It is "extremely" important to keep in mind that aside from the need for manufacturers to make the transition to Direct Import business to stay on an equal footing with their competition, there are significant other advantages for manufacturers to participate in a Direct Import program. We will review these advantages as part of today´s discussion.
